brookeandbobbi.com is a business that traces it history to the Chardonnay-infused
reunions of two sisters, Brooke Aherne and Robin Rountree, which usually occurred
at Thanksgiving or Christmas. At an old sea captain’s house in eastern Connecticut,
the sisters, one a commercial interior designer, the other an erstwhile family counselor
(both Duke University graduates), would sit around a well-worn farm table hand-painting
literally anything that was not bolted down. As the paint was spread and the wine
flowed, stories of each’s own family were exchanged; tears fell, laughs were shared,
and the two sisters from far apart were brought together once again.
What began with hand-painted glassware, Christmas ornaments, and custom painted furniture
for immediate family evolved into a cottage industry for each. Friends and neighbors,
seeing the sisters’ work, implored them to expand their horizons - to revive a piece
of tired furniture, to hand-paint a floor, to decorate a baby’s nursery, and on and
on. Brooke and Robin happily responded to this unsolicited demand and as the volume
of their work increased, the artistic standards they set for themselves became ever
higher. Brush strokes became more precise, favorite patterns were developed and
finishes were perfected. The very nature of their work, its unique character, and
its inevitable sentimental value to their clients, demanded this growing level of
expertise.
As the years unfolded and the number of completed projects grew, they began to consider
how they could create a more substantial business doing what they loved... creating
and marketing unique and functional art, while still being mothers who lived some
800 miles apart.
And now, artists at heart, entrepreneurs in spirit, and mothers in the real world,
Brooke and Robin (Bobbi) have launched brookeandbobbi.com, an online store offering
only the very best of their functional art.
These two have always been fascinated by the process of creation. They believe beautifully
designed, hand-crafted products are more enjoyable and more pleasing than mass-produced,
disposable design. We hope you feel the same, and that you enjoy the products you
find here as much as they are enjoyed by the artists who have created them.
